The Opportunity

Crafting and evangelizing a cross-brand, multi-product, multi-platform design system has the potential to enable a streamlined approach to product, design and development processes while promoting brand consistencies and an improved user experience. The proposed flexible framework would empower teams to spend less time creating tablestakes experiences and more time enhancing and innovating; enabling more Disney magic across products and platforms.

Final deliverables would include a Documentation Website (behind Disney SSO), Figma and Sketch Design Library Resources to support teams globally, and their counterpart engineering repositories.

The Approach

Design and Engineering audits were conducted across all Disney streaming services, breaking down experiences through an atomic lens. This identified design deltas across products and paved the path forward to align on best-in-class experiences.

 

 

The launch of an internal Prism documentation website created a single source of truth for design, engineer and product teams

 

Detailed developer specs were centralized into a shared Prism Design System Library, documenting the flexibility that would be required in order to support the range of brand identities

 

A Universal Color Palette and Type System were established in order to create the Prism’s out-of-the-box components

Universal styles were created to be implemented across all platforms, including iOS, android, and ReactJS as well as the various television OTT platforms.

 

 

Prism Product Identity

When creating the Prism product identity the goal was to retain whimsical characteristics of the Disney experience while maintaining the sophistication and polish that reflects a best-in-class design team. By creating a custom, rounded and approachable logotype (a nod to the iconic Mickey head) and using that as a foundation for our illustration guidelines – thoughtfully curated in a brand agnostic visual language – a scalable identity was crafted that supported the current brands under the streaming umbrella and opened up a flexible framework for all future brands.

The Solution

Prism’s innovative system harmonizes the user experiences across a diverse portfolio of platforms and products by implementing reusable structural elements, components, and layouts as well as their counterpart guidelines and developer repositories. Throughout implementation, the system proved to enhance user engagement, improved scalability for future innovations, and increased collaboration among teams. Measured by design consistency, development speed, user satisfaction, feature adoption, and inter-team collaboration, this initiative created a cohesive and efficient design ecosystem that significantly elevated the experience across Disney's streaming offerings.
